As the new 30 Famine intern, I wanted to master the skill of the new(ish) online fundraising platform… So when I had questions…I went to ‘The Guru’ (David Pitts). Here’s what I learned and how your Famine fundraising just got way more fun & easy!
Q: Oh, wise Guru, what is online fundraising?
A: Online fundraising is an awesome way to maximize your fundraising! It allows you to connect with more people when you ask for funds. For instance, now you can invite Aunt Sally who lives nine states away to donate in a matter of seconds! It really works.
Q: Sounds awesome, but how does it work?
A: Your Church or Group has a “team.” You join your team online and set up your own personalized page. You can tell YOUR story of why you are doing the 30 Hour Famine and even personalize it with your own picture or video. Once that’s done, you send out emails to Aunt Sally, friends, relatives, teachers, and everyone else you know. You can also add your fundraising page link on Facebook or Twitter. It tracks how much you get and it’s very effective!
Q: Is it easy to set up, Guru?
A: It’s super easy. Once you’re registered, we provide all kinds of helpful information to walk you through it. Just go to 30hourfamine.org, click on “students” and “set up my fundraising page”. There, you will find documents like our quick-start guide that gives you the step-by-step on set up.
Q: How long does it take to sign up?
A: It should only take a few minutes.
Q: Guru, share your wisdom, why fundraise online?
A: Less paperwork. No more “check is in the mail” excuse. You can reach more people who may not live near you, and the funds get to World Vision right away which will help children and families in need faster.
Q: Do you have a smartphone app?
A: At this time no… But hopefully in the near future.
Q: Please tell me Guru, is my online information safe?
A: Yes! We are using state of the art technology that will keep you and your donors’ information and privacy safe. This is a big deal to us, and we take it seriously.
Q: What are a few ways to effectively use the tool to fundraise?
A: Facebook, Facebook , Facebook. Post your fundraising page link on Facebook a few times a week when leading up to your Famine event. You could even post it after your Famine event! People will see it and donate. But don’t forget to email, too. Aunt Sally might not be on Facebook, but she would LOVE to get an email from you.
Q: Do I have to do online fundraising to do the 30 Hour Famine?
A: Nope. It is important that you fundraise, but online fund-raising is one more tool in your arsenal in the fight against hunger.
Q: Is the site good for anything else, oh Guru?
A: The Blog is a great resource to get you info on the 30 Hour Famine, find resources to help you, and to see how your funds are making a difference. Also sometimes you may get a peek behind the wall of what really goes on. We’ve got a wacky staff!
“Thank you, oh wise Guru.”
“Anytime, young grasshopper.”
