WHAT IS THE 30 HOUR FAMINE?
The 30 Hour Famine is a World Vision program that allows young people to make a significant impact on the problem of world hunger while growing closer to God and to each other. By pledging to go without food for 30 hours, participants not only raise money to help feed and care for children worldwide, but also gain an understanding of how it feels to experience hunger. Over the years we've learned that this experience, combined with a greater awareness of the suffering taking place in many parts of the world, will inspire young people to compassion and a greater desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Learning to rely on God and each other also bonds them and helps them grow spiritually.
Last year, over 600,000 young people across the United States helped raise over $11.6 million dollars to help feed and care for children in countries like Kenya, Indonesia, Haiti, and the United States.

CAN ADULTS DO THE 30 HOUR FAMINE?
Yes! Although the 30 Hour Famine is geared towards youth, we encourage everyone to participate. In many churches, parents and other adults also fast during the 30 hours. This demonstrates support and encouragement for the young people involved.

WHAT CAN MY GROUP DO DURING THE 30 HOURS?
Our Leader’s/Activity Guide is full of exciting activities your group can take part in during the Famine. There are ideas for community service projects, games, fundraisers, and more. Another great resource for activities is this web site. Here leaders have posted their best ideas of what has worked for them. To check those out, go to the leaders area and click on the menu bar where it says "Planning Guide".

HOW DO I GET STARTED RAISING GROUP FUNDS FOR THIS YEAR'S EVENT?
The first key to getting started is to set a fundraising goal. If you've already signed up, then you may have done this already as part of the signup process. If you haven't, there are a couple of ways to determine a goal. One way for groups to set a goal is to say that each participant in your group will raise $360 by asking twelve people to donate $30. Why $360? Simple. Every $30 raised can help feed and care for a child for a month, so $360 provides much needed assistance for a year. (For more information on how $30 can help feed and care for a child for a month, visit this page on our site.) Once you have a set goal, then create a plan to reach it. Your group might use the method above. Or you might decide to do group fundraisers such as car washes, or some type of craft show/bazaar. For other ideas, look through the Leaders Guide that you receive when you sign up, check out the "Raise Funds" page under the "How to do the Famine" section of the Leaders area here on the web site, or visit the Group Leaders Community area to see what other Leaders have done or are doing.

WHY DID I RECEIVE AN INCOMPLETE ORDER OF REWARDS?
We are terribly sorry you did not receive your complete order of rewards. Famine rewards are issued on a first-come, first serve basis, as long as supplies last. We may have been out of some of the reward items you requested and had to fill your order with the supplies that we had available. In those cases, you should have received some great substitute reward items. Please be assured we are working to provide the best possible service we can to you.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECEIVE MY GROUP'S REWARDS?
You can expect to receive your reward orders approximately 6-8 weeks after you send your funds in to World Vision. Since it is difficult to gauge from year to year what we'll need, we do sometimes temporarily run out of some items, causing a delay in orders being shipped. All rewards orders are final - no exchanges or returns can be accepted. To ensure the proper delivery of your reward items, send in your money and report form along with a copy of your Leader’s Control sheet within 6 weeks of your Famine event date. Be sure to indicate the quantity you need of each item. Be sure to keep a copy of the Control Sheet for yourself - your copy will let you know which reward each participant is eligible to receive. Be sure your account number is printed on your Control Sheet with the group leader’s name and correct address. Please send us a copy of your Control Sheet and keep a copy for yourself.

HOW DO I GET STARTED RAISING DONATIONS FOR THIS YEAR'S EVENT?
Here's a great tip, and a great goal to set for yourself: $30 feeds and cares for a child for a month. Try to see if you can raise enough to feed a child for a year! All you have to do is ask 12 people to sponsor you for the 30 hours ($1 for each hour). If they do, then twelve people will have each given you $30, which means you'll have raised $360, enough to feed and provide basic care to a child for a whole year! Then try to feed TWO children for a year!

HOW CAN I CONNECT AND SHARE WITH OTHER PARTICIPANTS?
Register as a user in the online "Community". When you do, you'll be able to join in on discussions broken down by topic, or add your own topics for discussion. This is a great way to find out what some other groups like yours are doing!

WHY SHOULD I DONATE TO THE 30 HOUR FAMINE?
Supporting World Vision's 30 Hour Famine is a wonderful way to reaffirm in teens the value of reaching out to others in need. It doesn't take a lot - only $30 can help feed and care for a child for a month. And by donating money to participating groups, you're providing an invaluable means to make a change for the better a reality in some of the poorest regions in the world. Finally, any donation is tax-deductible. World Vision will provide receipts for you to use for your tax returns for donations of $250 or more. Due to the enormous costs of doing so, we do not issue receipts for amounts under $250. However, we have provided individual Famine participants with receipts they can give to you.

WHERE ARE FAMINE FUNDS USED BY WORLD VISION?
Money raised by the 30 Hour Famine is used in projects all over the world. Countries like Uganda, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Niger, Guatemala, and many more, either already have, currently do, or will be receiving funds from World Vision through the 30 Hour Famine. A small percentage, not more than 15%, may be used here in the U.S. for World Vision's domestic work as well.
