No cell phone? No shower? No kidding.

The 30 Hour Famine allows us a brief taste of the hunger people around the world experience daily. However, in addition to hunger, there are many other aspects to poverty that we rarely think about.

For instance, how would you survive without electricity? What if your ‘bed’ was merely  a blanket in the dirt? Or, what would it be like having only one set of clothing to wear day after day? How would the emotions of shame, frustration, imprisonment, and helplessness shape your world? Try it. See for yourself.

For the next 30 days as we countdown to the National 30 Hour Famine event, we will be delving into these emotions as well as experiencing the joy that comes with simplicity. We challenge you to fast from various aspects of your life and spend time in prayer for those around the world.

You can take part in the 30 Days of Fasting and Prayer with your friends, youth group, or family. Here’s how:

  • Check our Facebook or Twitter daily for a verse and brief description of the item we’re fasting from.
  • Share pictures and stories on Facebook & Twitter about what God is teaching you through this journey. Who know, you might even be featured on our blog!

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked, to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” Isaiah 58: 6-7

* A special thanks to The Grove Community Church Outreach team for creating the initial 30 Days of Fasting Challenge – we appreciate your creativity and boldness!
